Learn what to look for in Zpacks' Bargain Bin, from discounted tents to clearance clothing. We explain the trade-offs, share decision rules, and help you score real ultralight deals.
Quick Answer
Zpacks' Bargain Bin offers genuine discounts on ultralight gear, but it's not a random clearance bin. You'll find new, current-model items with minor cosmetic differences or last-generation designs that still perform well. The key is knowing which deals are worth it and which to skip.
What Makes Bargain Bin Different from Regular Clearance
Most clearance sections sell returned or damaged items. Zpacks' Bargain Bin is different: items are brand new, often from a previous model year or with a small cosmetic flaw that doesn't affect performance. That means you get the same ultralight construction and materials at a lower price.
The trade-off is limited availability. Bargain Bin items are one-offs or small batches, so you can't wait for a restock. If you see a size or color you need, you have to decide quickly.
What to Look For: Tents and Shelters
Shelters are the biggest savings in the Bargain Bin. A tent like the Bargain Pivot Duo Tent is marked down from $764 to $458.40 — a 40% discount. That's significant for a Dyneema shelter that weighs under two pounds. The catch is that the floor color or print may differ from the standard version, but the structure and durability are identical.
If you're in the market for a two-person ultralight tent, this is a strong deal. But if you need a specific floor pattern or color for aesthetics, you might prefer the full-price version.
Clothing: What to Expect and What to Skip
Clothing deals can be hit or miss. The Clearance Men's Ventum Windshell is a Gen 1 model marked down from $79.95 to $55.17. That's a solid savings on a wind shell that still blocks wind and packs small. The Gen 2 may have minor updates, but the core function is the same.
On the other hand, a basic cotton-blend tee like the Clearance Zpacks Crest T-Shirt is only $15.54 — a 26% discount from $21. That's a small saving on an item that isn't technical. Unless you need a spare shirt, it's not a priority buy.
The Bargain Item Policy: Read Before You Buy
Every Bargain Bin item comes with a specific policy. It's not the same as Zpacks' standard return policy. Make sure you read the terms for each item before adding it to your cart. Some items are final sale, and others may have limited warranty coverage.
This is especially important for shelters and rain jackets, where a small defect could affect waterproofing. The Women's Vertice Rain Jacket at $196.37 (down from $269) is a great deal, but check the condition notes first.
How to Decide: Bargain Bin Decision Rules
- Rule 1: Prioritize high-cost items: Shelters and rain jackets offer the biggest absolute savings. A 40% discount on a tent saves you hundreds of dollars. A 26% discount on a tee saves you five bucks. Focus your Bargain Bin search on the expensive gear first. Check shelters and rain jackets before clothing.
- Rule 2: Know the difference between 'bargain' and 'clearance': 'Bargain' items are brand new with cosmetic differences. 'Clearance' items are previous-generation models. Both are discounted, but the reason differs. Read the item description to understand exactly what you're getting. Always read the product description for condition notes.
- Rule 3: Act fast on limited sizes: Bargain Bin items are often single units or very small batches. If you see your size in a tent or jacket, don't wait. Once it's gone, it's gone. Set an alert or check the page regularly. Bookmark the Bargain Bin page and check weekly.
- Rule 4: Skip items with small discounts: A 10-15% discount on a $20 item isn't worth the limited availability and potential hassle. Save your Bargain Bin attention for items where the savings justify the lack of choice. Aim for discounts of at least 20% or $50 in absolute savings.
